Heat Exchanger
Two-stream adiabatic balance: ṁₕ(h₁ − h₂) = ṁ_c(h₄ − h₃). Fill the four stream states and the calculator solves the missing enthalpy, temperature, or mass flow.

Frequently asked
- How does the heat exchanger balance work?
- For an adiabatic shell the hot-stream duty equals the cold-stream duty: ṁₕ(h₁ − h₂) = ṁ_c(h₄ − h₃). Give three of the four states (two properties each) plus mass flows, and the calculator solves the missing enthalpy or mass flow on the other stream.
- Can the shell lose heat?
- Yes — enter the external heat loss Q̇ and the balance becomes ṁₕ(h₁ − h₂) = ṁ_c(h₄ − h₃) + Q̇.
- Which streams are which?
- Hot in → hot out is the hot stream (states 1→2); cold in → cold out is the cold stream (states 3→4). The sign convention follows the standard textbook layout.
